Dawson Named EC Teacher of Excellence

Mount Airy City Schools (MACS) is pleased to announce that Mrs. Elizabeth Dawson has been named the 2019 Exceptional Children’s (EC) Educator of Excellence. Mrs. Dawson received this recognition at the statewide Exceptional Children Division’s 69th Conference held in Greensboro this week where she represented MACS.

Mrs. Dawson noted, “It is an honor to be recognized for doing work that I love. I enjoy working with students to see them find confidence and joy as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally."

This award is designed to recognize a teacher who has demonstrated excellence in meeting the needs of exceptional children. Mrs. Dawson has been an educator in MACS for 27 years. During her time teaching in the general education setting, she discovered her passion for teaching students with exceptional needs. Through her role as an EC teacher, she has dedicated herself daily to meeting her students at their point of need, both academically and emotionally. Her expertise and ability to advocate for students has positively impacted her students, peers, and school. In addition to teaching students, she has been a leader in her school and within the district’s EC department by sharing her expertise and mentoring beginning teachers.

EC Coordinator Scott Dollyhite notes, “Mrs. Dawson’s knowledge has served as an invaluable asset throughout her career and the guidance she has given other educators will benefit students for years to come.”
