Our new Math and Problem-based and Project-based Learning for Student Success (MAPSS) grant work kicked off recently at the Summer Institute. Teachers from Mount Airy City Schools, Davidson County Schools, Lexington City Schools, Alamance-Burlington Schools and Randolph County Schools all participated in two weeks of professional development at Wake Forest University. During this time the focus revolved around how problem-based and project-based learning can be implemented in the K-8 mathematics classroom. An innovative component to the institute was the two day PBL Camp where teachers had the opportunity to gain first hand experience with students using their new knowledge of problem-based learning. Teachers also received training in the area of leadership development. The MAPSS Grant is a three-year grant that allows teachers to learn from our partners at Wake Forest University-CERTL, The University of Texas-Dallas and the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium (PTEC).
